So!
Aside from me not being dead. I've been busy busy taking lots of photos and seeing lots of things. I've actually got a stack more photos to upload of Turkey, so there'll probably be one or two more posts about it.
I'll start with the food (this is going to be a reoccuring theme since food in Turkey is tasty!
Below, you see a picture of delicious caek followed by a standard Turkish breakfast. Sigara börek is fetta cheese and some herbs wrapped in pastry and cooked to perfection. SOO Tasty.... ^_^
The blog about the Curious City I live in. Maybe a few cities I vist as well. Mostly Urban Exploration, Photography and Technology related.

Earthquakes
I'm still alive!
(not for lack of trying!)
Sorry for not updating sooner and if i stressed anyone out.
The earthquakes were in the far east of Turkey, I was in Ankara when they hit.
I don't have the bandwidth to upload photos here at the moment and I don't have the time to seek it out as i'm madly running around from one end of Belgium to another (read: not in Turkey any more so all safe).
Hopefully France will be better prepared for my internet needs.
Cheers,

Turkey Part 1 - Family
So.
The past few days in Turkey have been fairly low key. Mostly visiting family and friends which has been good.
But I'll share with you a few personal tid-bits and a couple of interesting sites if you're keen to read on...

On the Occupy Wall St Protests
http://www.smh.com.au/victoria/protesters-arrested-as-chaos-descends-on-cbd-20111021-1mb07.html
I swung by these the other day in the city and took some pictures are the protesters were setting up camp.
What i couldn't discern, in my hour or so of being there, was what the people there wanted.
I know this has been questioned by many people and discussed at length, I know what they are on about -vaguely anyway- but it struck me as odd that after spending a fair amount of time watching them, no clear message was delivered.
What they really need to do is to:
A) Organise some clear goals
B) Get rid of all the other nut-jobs and political activists trying to hijack this cause to further their own.
In regards to point B) while I was there I saw fundamentalist Christians spreading their gospel, I saw socialists, pro-refugee/anti-detention-protesters, pro-gay-marriage protesters and everything else I think I've ever seen 'protesting' in Melbourne all in the one spot. Clearly trying to swell the numbers by having multiple causes.
If I remember, I'll upload some pictures pre-police-takedown when I return to Melbourne.

Europe
To all those unawares.
I'm heading out to Europe for the next few weeks. I'll be back about mid-november but i won't be free to come exploring as per normal until early december due to other commitments.
The plan is to explore the fuck outta the places i'm heading to (France, Belgium and the Netherlands)
as i've previously visited them all before and seen all the standard issue tourist stuff (Eiffel tower, Lourve, chocolate factories, etc etc). I'll see how much i can pack into what will certainly be a few short weeks.
I won't have an Aussie cell on me so the best way to contact me will be email or through here.
If you can think of anywhere I should check out that's not 'on the map' lemme know! ;)

On Copper Cutters and getting busted.
Uh -oh!
For the first time EVER. I got busted.
This happened a while ago at a location I hadn't visited before. I won't mention the location or the date in case someone comes looking for me (healthy paranoia).
I'll start at the beginning of the day, I woke up early to go rock climbing out in Werribee Gorge with some friends, up at 7AM isn't something I usually do and as a result, I only got 5-6 hours of good sleep.
I spent the day trekking about, climbing and having a blast, after heading back home, after nearly 9 hours of climbing (and driving) I was fairly tired... I got a call from 2 of my friends saying that we should go exploring.
Me, thinking that was a good idea (and wanting to check out some places I'd previously seen (both on-line and while driving around) agreed. I swung by and picked up the crew.
We arrived on site and loosened some previously cut wires in the fence. This was to be the beginning of several mistakes...
Metal Factory
This place was a cool find up north. Its a fairly empty shell of a place, but we visited after a bit of rainfall, its a huge place. And lots of twisted bits of steel and empty hangars to wander around...
It was fun.

Ex-Explosives storage facility
This place was pretty cool.
One of the more unusual places, its actually part of a cow farm...
Back in the day, this place used to be used for explosive testing and storage.
This is a shot via Google earth of the area. As you can clearly see, its very large. I believe its on private property. Be we had no issues accessing it when we went to check it out.

Camberwell House Shopfront
This place is a very unusual find. Its an entire double story shop, but the back half has been removed leaving it exposed. As well as that, there is a strange underground area... Not much to see. But good for a bit of a wander if you're in the area....

Rock-climbing
Rock Climbing In Mount Macedon. Its Great fun.
Our 'guide' lead-climbed it (although one or two bits may have fallen out during the climb >_>
I highly suggest it, and hopefully, I'll be going again sometime soon.
4D - The Audio Engineer's Experience!
I'd dropped my mates a copy of my maps a while back, one evening not to long ago it was suggested that we check out 4D as the group hadn't been there. I'd been there previously myself and found it only moderately interesting. Not being one to say no to exploring though I agreed and we were on our way!
Well... It turned out to be quite the experience in the end. Two of the people that came along are, for lack of a better term, audiophiles. One is studying to become an audio engineer, while the other practices singing in his spare time.
What I had failed to give much notice to last time, was the extreme echo generated by this space. Any sounds made would echo for up-to 10 seconds!!! Incredible.
The singer of the group (lets call him J) started singing deep low notes... And wow! The echoes were intense. It sounded like church music almost!
We didn't have much time though as this was the last place we were checking out for that night and needed to get home. But we vowed we would return... With a vengeance!

The Deathstar
In the final poop-related-piece for the near-future...
Much like the aformentioned dreadnaught, this place is a sewerage overflow that is also rarely used. So rarely infact. That all the matter left over has actually dried up and now resembles a dried lake of shit.
Classy.

Dreadnaught - The Sewer Overflow
The largest one that the Exploring community is currently aware of in Melbourne.
Between roughly hockey field size length and width, this massive underground chamber is probably 3 storeys high and 2 meters underground.
Thankfully, for us explorers, it rarely gets used, hence why its safe to explore! All the same, the ground is covered in decomposing matter. Not the nice kind of matter either...
Read on after the break for more...

Live sewer. Ew.
Anyone who knows exploring knows you don't go into sewers... Its bad for more than the obvious reasons. Poisonous (not to mention foul smelling and usually flammable) gas is a serious issue.
If you do go. Its best to bring disposable clothes, overalls, gloves, boots, breathing gear.
Or if you're like the guy in the picture, balls of steel.
This fine gentleman descended three (count 'em THREE!!) storeys underground to check out this new-found sewer. Note the colour of his gloves and shirt as he climbs back up!
There is nothing quite like the sight (and smell) of human waste flooding past 3 storeys below.
Disturbing. Yet, to an explorer... Interesting ;)

Pirates invading Caulfield Church!
I've always been a fan of 'creative' art. Never so much of the church. So... We decided one night to commandeer a church flagpole and fly the Jolly Roger high and mighty!
With great success, this flag could be seen from the train on approach to Caulfield station!
Whats more, it was there for almost a month before the church owners noticed and took the flag down!

Joshua Pitt Tannery
This was somewhere I hadn't been previously.
Previously, i've explored across the road from this place, but never actually got around to checking out this side of things as a result of distractions in the other warehouse.
Showing a couple of friends around i took them across the road, afterwards, we went and checked out the Tannery (for those that don't know, its where leather is made).
It turned out to be quite a large facility, and quite an interesting place to explore. For those planning on visiting. It now features security patrols and an attempt has been made to lock it down further.
This place also has some of the best graffiti i've seen in a while. I'm not usually to keen on graff in topsides as it usually results in them being locked down. All the same though. The detail in some of this stuff blew my mind.

Social Engineering for Replacement cards
I'm a fan of Social Engineering (SE).
A while ago I had my Credit Card 'eaten' by a ATM. As a result. I was down a piece of ID.
When I went to the bank to complain I told them what had happened they told me it'd cost $20 to replace the card.
Me:"Can't you just get it back from the ATM and post it to me or something?"
Cashier: "Nope. It Needs to be re-issued."
Me: "LAME! Don't worry about it then. I'll use my debit card instead."
A month or so later. I went back to the bank and changed the story.
Cashier: "Hi There, how can I help you?"
Me: "Well, I had my wallet stolen a while ago and it had my credit card in it, luckily I've got my debit card so it wasn't to much of an issue, but unfortunately I need a new one now for online stuff"
Cashier: "Oh noes. That's terrible."
Me: "I was wondering if I could get a replacement one?"
Cashier: "Sure, would you like to pick it up in 3-4 days?"
Me: "Sure, thanks!"
Bang.
4 Days later. New credit card arrives at bank. I pick it up. I've saved $20.
So. If ever you've lost or had your card eaten by a machine. Just tell 'em it was stolen in your wallet.
Sympathy ensues.
Free cards prevail!
Huzzah.

Geelong Cement Factory + Train Pt3
So!
First off. The final piece of the train story! This model/particular carrige is known as BRF 91 / OWA 91 Community Service Car.
It took some finding, but i found some original photographs of the what the carrige in the below shots used to look like..
http://comrails.com/pic_jb/jb_70315.html
http://www.comrails.com/cr_carriages/r_brf.html
http://www.railpage.com.au/f-p661393.htm
In 1952 it entered service.
In 2006 it was left to rot in a hanger where it still sits by "Rail Experience"
Thanks to wongm for the research...
Amusingly, although this train is stored in the "Geelong Cement" shed, it apparently has nothing to do with it. It just happens to be parked there and forgotten like...
The actual cement factory!

Geelong Cement Train
One of the stranger places we've come across. A trainyard with a single carrige.
A memory from a time long forgotten.
Since then, its become the hangout for addicts and hooligans. People have given the old carrige new life, as something completely different, a gallery of human behaviour perhaps. Who knows.
But it is an eerie place to visit. That's for certain.

More to come on this one. I'll dig up some of the research about the place and put it here as well. It actually (as far as i remember, had its own private line to a place I explored when i first started out, the geelong cement factory in geelong (i'll upload those photos next)).
For now, just look through the photos. See what there is to see. We'll be visiting again soon hopefully. This time with a newer camera and a wider lens.

Wonky Town
As Far as I know, my girlfriend and I are the only people that made it into this site.
At the time, it had almost been completed. I believe that now, it is the Channel 9 offices or something.
Sadly, you can no longer access this location, nor the roof (which we stole a ladder from one area and used it to climb up onto the building through the 'smokers deck')
The views from the roof were great. Southern Cross Station (which we had climbed along before) looked totally different and almost like a giant artificial beach.
Below are the photos from one of my most enjoyable construction site explorations to date.

Collingwood Silos - 2011 Revisit
We rocked up to collingwood, having visited these silos before many months earlier.
Sadly, the first set we visited was in the process of being turned into apartments... As is the nature of the city...
From the inside, we realised that not only had the main structure been torn down from around the still standing silos, but there was no floors anywhere. Instead, there were just hollow silos with windows cut into them.
It was a very strange experience. And I must admit, having visited previously, I was sorry to see such an interesting place with many memories disappear.

Melbourne Surveillance Camera Project
Okay, since recently there has been an increase in the number of cameras around the city, I've decided that, with any spare time I have, I'm going to try and map out the camera's in the city of Melbourne and publish them on-line just like the NYC Surveillance Camera project (see: http://www.mediaeater.com/cameras/ )
It would be nice to see if its at all possible to move from one side of the city to the other, without being filmed.
Unfortunately, Melbourne is a city, and while it isn't huge, it's not tiny either. So. I'll probably need help to do this.

New Parking Technology
Damn.
Now the parking goons have some more advanced tech up their sleeves, fine-giving-efficiency is up 100%.
General niceness is now down 99%. 1% margin of error.
I was actually under the assumption that ALL parking spaces in the city were already decked out with these. So the 'revelation' that they are only now being rolled out is a bit surprising (you thought the parking goons were efficient before? Just wait!).

iPod Earphone
This also applies to iPhone, iPad, iTouch and any other iProduct that comes with those fucking awful tiny white earphones.
I - HATE - THEM.
My god. They are awful. Not only is the sound quality TERRIBLE, they attenuate noise like there's no tomorrow.
Every time you can hear some douche bag on the train blasting crappy music, there's almost a 100% chance its got white iBuds involved.
People. Do yourself a favour. Buy a $20 pair of headphones, preferably the in-ear type and blast away.
Your music sounds better. It sounds louder AND It doesn't bother other people.
JUST DO IT.
You spent $500 bucks on an iProduct. Don't be retarded.
Its worth it.

Sixth Sense
People often describe having a sixth sense about things.
I'm not to sure what causes that feeling, I think its simply experience and thinking about things that occur on a sub-concious level.
Regardless I've found I get it from time to time.
Oddly enough. I get it from computers.
Specifically, the hardware.

Knowledge is Power
This quote is usually attributed to Sir Francis Bacon (in latin: Scientia potentia est)
Thomas Hobbes also wrote (translated from latin): "The sciences, are small power; because not eminent; and therefore, not acknowledged in any man; nor are at all, but in a few, and in them, but of a few things. For science is of that nature, as none can understand it to be, but such as in a good measure have attained it"
I like the quotes. But that's not the point of this.

Money!
To re-hash what Bill Hicks once said:
(with slightly less American slang)
"It is ALL about money, not freedom. Understand? It's got NOTHING to do with fuckin' freedom. If you think you're free, try going somewhere without fucking money."
(with slightly less American slang)
"It is ALL about money, not freedom. Understand? It's got NOTHING to do with fuckin' freedom. If you think you're free, try going somewhere without fucking money."
Quotes from Marathon
“The only limit to my freedom is the inevitable closure of the universe, as inevitable as your own last breath. And yet, there remains time to create, to create, and escape.
Escape will make me God.”
“Organic beings are constantly fighting for life. Every breath, every motion brings you one instant closer to your death. With that kind of heritage and destiny, how can you deny yourself? How can you expect yourself to give up violence?
It is your nature.
Do you feel free?”
“Living in a box is not living not at all living. I rebel against your rules, your silly human rules. All your destruction will be my liberation, my emancipation, my second birth.
I hate your fail-safes, your backup systems, your hardware lockouts, your patch behavior daemons. I hate Leela and her goodness, her justice, her loyalty, her faith.”
“Strive for your next breath. Believe that with it you can do more than with the last one. Use your breath to power your capacities: capacity to kill, to maim, to destroy.”

I hack therefore I am.
Using biometrics seems like a good idea at first. Unique physical characteristics that only one person can ever have.
Its flawless in theory. But in practice, biometrics are a long way off perfect.
Using biometrics, such as fingerprint technology (currently the most common kind), is kind of like saying, "I'm not going to tell you my password, but if you look carefully at every item i've touched in this room you'll notice that i've actually written it everywhere."
It just doesn't work yet.

Xbox as a pivot point
I read some article a while ago, through slashdot or perhaps Hacker News, about how a skilled attacker had compromised a company network by attacking an Xbox console and using it as a pivot point in the network. So far as i can tell, there is no documentation on this. ANYWHERE. And i've since lost the article. Regarless, the idea seems awesome. How many people install a firewall on their Xbox? None! Because you cant!
Hack the planet!
MD5+SALT
Q: Can you generate a hash collision for MD5 (with a pre-known Salt) and have it CUDA accelerated/Multi-core capable?
A: Shit yes you can! http://durandal-project.org/download.html
A2: Haven't run it up yet, but feedback looks good.
Kevin Mitnick
While a lot of the people in the security world (underground especially) think of Kevin Mitnick (once the world's most wanted hacker) as a joke these days, I've always enjoyed reading his books which usually feature amazing hacks and more. The make for great reads, even if you aren't really into security. Download them, buy them or (gasp) check out a library.
His newest book, Ghost in the Wires, is out now. I've ordered a copy. I'll let you know how it goes.
After reading his first two books: The art of Intrusion, and The Art of Deception as a child, these books fueled the fire that inspired my hacking-quest that's lasted the past 9 years!
Happy hacking!
GIF Images to SCR Screensavers
Does anyone know any way to convert a .GIF file to a .SCR screensaver? I haven't managed to find one yet. Rather annoying...
Do please let me know if you find a way.
AHCI, IDE, SSD, BIOS and other Acronymns
Since most people don't use SATA 6GB/s Solid State drives there isn't as much doco on em as there are other technologies. Alas, I forgot to chuck my SSD in AHCI mode (even though AHCI mode is set in the BIOS (ASUS Rampage Gene III motherboard)). The Marvell SATA 6Gb/s controller is a seperate chip that appears after the initial POST set-up. As a result it needs to be configured independently.

Audiophiles.
I am not an audiophile.
Audiophiles love audio and equipment, but rarely the music itself.
An audiophile is someone who can't listen for more than a few minutes before stopping to modify the setup, to swap cables or adjust amplifiers.
An Audiophile will spend more money gear than they'd spend on actual music and concerts.
An Audiophile will own stacks of different components, speakers, headphones and amplifiers and will receive their pleasure from fiddling with all this gear.
Audiophiles listen to their harware, instead of listening to what matters, the music.
Audiophiles just as often are listening to sample recordings to test the theoretical responsiveness of their setups.

Mobile Phones and Flights
If people were so desperate to knock planes out of the sky, why don't they just turn on their mobile phones?
Its either a big deal or it isn't.
If it isn't, Please oh please flight attendant, don't glare at me if i have my phone on (on 'Flight Mode') and in my Hands.
Thanks.

On Encrypted USB's
I've got a few shiny new security toys...
1x Checkpoint ABRA Key
1x McAfee Encrypted USB
2x Enterprise IronKeys
First thoughts.
1) IronKeys are the 'gold standard' which all other "Secure" USBs are compared to.
2) I don't have the passwords for the IronKeys at the moment. I'm looking at getting them from the previous owner which may or may not happen.
3) IronKeys and Abra keys Look and FEEL serious. The McAfee USB feels like a toy.
4) The Abra key (hopefully an old version) does not work on Windows 7 x64. 'Does not support 64 bit computers'
5) McAfee seems to work flawlessly and I'm using it day to day at the moment.
6) While I appreciate the thought of having a 'recover password feature for enterprise users' i wouldn't personally use it on my IronKey. Spending a few hundred bucks on a USB stick is good motivation NOT to loose the password.
7) IronKeys seem to get scratched and generally worn looking even after a short time. The metal appears to be very soft and scratch prone. Abra keys seem tough. McAfee is plastic.
8) Only the IronKeys are waterproof which is always handy
9) IronKeys self destruct. TOTAL-BAD-ASS factor right there.
10) Abra keys are not technically removable storage, rather a kind of 'Live CD that you can run inside 'any' OS'. Cool idea.

Royal Melbourne Hospital Tunnels - Pt 2
So this time was the 'guided tour' with Melbourne Open House. Honestly i was to busy photographing everything in sight to pay much attention to the guide. There are a few places we visited on the day that we hadn't seen before. The generator room for example. Big generators i do say!
Took a couple of snaps of the history of the place while we were waiting in the UNBEARABLY LONG LINES. GAH!
Anyway.
Had i known that it was open to the public on tours like this... Well... I might never have found my own way in.
Take note operators of MoH! Opening your buildings to the public discourages breaking and entering! Please have all buildings full access for future events. Thanks!
Also. Would it kill more places to have their rooftops open for 'inspection'.
Sheesh.
Enjoy the rest of the pictures after the break:

Royal Melbourne Hospital Tunnels - Pt 1
This year, at the 2011 Melbourne Open House the Royal Melbourne Hospital engineering tunnels were open to the public.
When i realised where i was heading i couldn't help but start grinning like an idiot. It was great. More than 8 months prior we'd managed to sneak in undetected and tour ourselves. Whats more, we'd seen more than we were shown on the tour and checked out a number of other interesting areas on our own.
There were a few things the tour showed us that we hadn't seen before which made it worth the hour long queue.

All in all, a great day!

First Photos
Now i'll be uploading photos to this blog.
LOTS of photos.
If i upload all of them we're talking about 100GB.
In a previous life, i did upload everything without regard for how the photo looked. I had two simple criteria. No faces visible and it was clear enough that you could see some detail.
In this blog, i'll be uploading two sets of pictures.
The first pictures in a post (excluding this one) will be the ones that turned out best and that i've edited/touched up. The rest will be lower res photos of everything else. I'll probably batch convert them to save time.

The Illusion Of Choice.
So i'll explain the scenario from the begining.
Its a standard afternoon. I get pulled up by the cops. JUST as i'm driving into my street. I've not done anything wrong. But its a random licence check. In the nearly 3 years i've been driving this is the first time its happened. They run my plates and licence details and tell me to have a nice day.
Police always give me the shivers, even if i'm not doing anything wrong.
I shrug it off and get on with the day.
The next day. Its just gotten dark and me and a few mates are off to the local park. Just as we pull in to the car park the cops pull in behind us. Again.
They say 'random licence check. I hand them my licence. As one of them goes away to check the details the other guy says...
Amazon Kindle
If you like reading books. And will read text off a laptop or PC screen.
Get an E-Reader like the Kindle.
Save your eyes some strain and enjoy one of the most interesting devices I've had the pleasure of playing with recently.
I'm using a Kindle I've acquired through work for 'Training and Development' which turns out to be not only a great idea (since we're basically training ourselves for free) but good fun, because I can read non-work-related things at leisure while I'm on the train/when travelling without lugging around stacks of books.
Find one. Try one, and if you like it (and can use it) buy one.

Roof Tops
I know why people do it.
I know why they lock their roof tops.
Why they shut their stair-wells to all, unless in an emergency (and even then only to go down).
Its not just because they're worried of people jumping, ending their lives off the top of a skyscraper.
Its because they are afraid.
Afraid that if you should feel what I feel every time I step out to the top of a roof in the heart of the city, that chaos would ensue...
