Is pointless.
To me.
It simply leads to an infinite argument about, not who is right or wrong (since often there is no answer), but about who can express themselves either most convincingly or most adequately.
Such debates often include things like "Does god exist?", "What is the meaning of life?", and various other things concerning morality and abstract concepts that we, as primitive humans, cannot yet understand.
While I understand debating might bring ideas forth that had not previously been discussed and thus foster the creation of new ideas that may in turn lead to ground-breaking research being done (or some similar worthy result), I find it very hard to think that discussing such things will result in me perusing them after such a discussion ends.
As a result I often find that people will say something 'though provoking' expecting me to engage them, and I'll simply return to doing whatever I was doing with a casual 'I see'. I can often see their point, see what they're trying to get me to see, and (since I feel I'm generally rather unbiased) see both sides of the argument. Unless the argument has a bearing on my life, I see no reason to get into a meaning-less debate. Much less feel passionately about things.
Even things outside of 'philosophy' such as complex theoretical physics seem pointless to discuss. That's not to say I don't like to learn new things, just that many things are outside of my scope of knowledge. Its nice to know I could pursue it further if I desired so. But I'm usually happy enough with the summary when it comes to such things.
Gah.
See what I've done. All this jibber-jabber has bored me.
There's also no point in talking about if debating things has a point. Its pointless. There are arguments for and against and they're pretty much equal.
In summary.
If I feel like a serious debate, I'll tend to stick to things that are real tangible things. For everything else, instead of abstract concepts, just get to the point. If your point is (for example), "I believe in god" then good for you. If I'm interested, I'll enquire. but don't spend ten hours explaining what god can do and why he is great.
Ta.
