This year, at the 2011 Melbourne Open House the Royal Melbourne Hospital engineering tunnels were open to the public.
When i realised where i was heading i couldn't help but start grinning like an idiot. It was great. More than 8 months prior we'd managed to sneak in undetected and tour ourselves. Whats more, we'd seen more than we were shown on the tour and checked out a number of other interesting areas on our own.
There were a few things the tour showed us that we hadn't seen before which made it worth the hour long queue.

All in all, a great day!
These pictures are of the first visit (more after the break)
And now for the other slightly less-touristy area... ;)
The photography in some of the bits here is -VERY- rushed. It was hot, humid, noisy and tense exploring this plant. There were also warnings for Asbestos, machinery and a number of other things. Every so often PSSSSSCH! Steam would be let off randomly. Terrifying stuff if your trying to climb a ladder thats heated up as a result.
One of the ladders couldn't be climbed unless you had gloves on. - NOT COOL - OH&S much?
what a handsome young fellow in the last photo, holding onto that ladder going up into the darkest darkness
ReplyDeleteIt sure is a good thing he's wearing that safety mask.
ReplyDeleteFor anyone interested... Its a 'Blue P2' filter/mask.
Good for Asbestos, smoke, metal fumes, dusts, pollen and more.
I wouldn't mind a kit of P2GV Green filters which additionally do organic vapours and odours. Could certainly come in handy for places like the dreadnaught/deathstar.
Blindingly white masks bad, breathing mostly filtered air good. Troublesome...
ReplyDelete@Salt - It would be nice if they made darker coloured masks. But i guess it doesn't fit with teh standard PPE requirements of 'stand-the-fuck-out'
ReplyDelete*sigh*
